For many years now I have used this loop as a Grouse Grind alternate for a workout with its quick access from the 'burbs. I spent some COVID time improving the route. Doing it clockwise offers a grind straight up a fall line to the highpoint at the Hollyburn Fir with a longer and more gradual descent. Doing it counter-clockwise will prolong the aerobic climb and test the quads on the descent.
Hiking counterclockwise, the trail starts where Brothers Creek crosses Millstream Road and climbs past the swimming holes, the power-line, and passes the Cross-creek Trail where it crosses Brothers Creek to the east on a bridge above waterfalls. Continuing, there is a post marking the junction with the Cross-creek trail to the west, turn onto Cross-creek trail here. After passing through a very wet and boggy area, the Baden Powell Trail is crossed, then Lawson Creek on a rustic bridge.
A steady climb at an easy grade then passes the first of two significant trees. Randy Stoltman and his brother Greg spotted these stand out trees as they rode bicycles along Marine Drive to their home in West Vancouver in the seventies. Randy was an aspiring forester with an interest in old standing trees in Southwestern BC and, with Greg, was doing long trips in the nearby mountains. Randy told me that using their compass they triangulated the location of the trees and walked up to them, and, using equipment from UBC, drilling a core to determine the age of the Doudlas Fir at over a thousand years. These trees became the intersection of the Cross-creek and the Upper and Lower Brewis trails.
