Day 1: Crossing the border on Labor Day weekend was quite slow and in Monroe Zoran wanted some Starbucks coffee which also took a long time. When we arrived at my usual stop at Snoqualmy Falls the parking lot was full on a late Saturday morning. An upper parking lot that I had not known about was full also, so we continued on and eventually stopped for lunch in a rest area east of Snoqualmy Pass. Later in the afternoon we continued to Pendleton in Oregon. Zoran knew a KOA campground there where he could get a discount. It was mostly motor homes, but we got a small grassy corner for tent camping. After we had cooked our dinner we went down into the town looking for a pub. The campsite and freeway were on a ridge and when we climbed back up Zoran had breathing problems, which didn't bode well for the climbs I had planned.
Day 2: We continued along I84 into Idaho and turned off at Bliss onto US30 for a late lunch at 1000 Springs. On my spring trip I had gotten a brochure of points of interest in southern Idaho including City of Rocks and Balanced Rock which was my first unfinished business. We turned west at Buhl and drove into a wide plane, zigzagging around farmers fields with no rock outcrops in sight anywhere. Then suddenly our road dropped into a small winding canyon, crossed a bigger one with a river, began climbing out and there was the unusual rock tower.
