1968 Cornice Blasting

We hiked up from the top of the T-Bar to Little Whistler, down to saddle then up to above the cornice

  The Toni Sailer Summer Ski Camp at Whistler Mountain, BC Canada was founded in the late 60's by Vancouver Ski Industry Icons Alan White & Roy Ferris . This became Dave Murray Ski Camp in 1984 and moved from the Whistler Glacier to Blackcomb Glacier in the late 90's.
  We hiked up the usual route from the top of the T-Bar to Little Whistler, put on skis then skied down to above the Saddle where we took off the skis & followed the path normally take to Whistler Peak. The dynamite had been ferried up in slings under a helicopter.

[photo]Corniceblasting02.jpg[caption]Cornice blasting 02-Hugh[/photo] The vertical face in front of Hugh Smythe is where a section of cornice broke off causing a chunk to come up & knock Paul off his belay & falling 70 feet. Fortunately he cleared the rocks & fell on the steep slope left from the resulting avalanche & was mostly just in shock.
