Three hikes on the Deeks Ridge Trail
Around the year 2000 Sev Heiberg worked on this trail, mostly single-handedly I believe. In January 2003 I tried it the first time. It was a poor snow year and I made it to about 1500m before there was too much snow. I found a scenic spot for lunch and to turn around. While I enjoyed my sandwich and the view I noticed a mountain goat looking at me from across a barely 20m wide gully. I had very seldom seen goats so close to town. On the descent I missed the turn-off to the steep gully where I had come up onto the ridge. When I realized my mistake I stopped. I had heard about a class3 route along the ridge, but with everything a bit wet and greasy I didn't want to risk an unknown downclimb. However when I saw that the forest to the north looked easy I went that way. This was of coarse a big risk. Had I gotten stuck somewhere I would not have had enough time to go back up and find the trail in daylight. But I was in luck. The forest led to a only slightly difficult funnel below which I found a large boulder field. From the SW corner it then was a fairly short but dense bush whack back to the road. That time I had walked from Deeks Creek bridge, but in those days the trail was still easy to follow and walking a normal pace I reached my car at sunset. On another trip many years ago when I returned from Deeks Lake and must have miscalculated or overlooked the time it began to get very dark in the forest. I had no flashlight and raced along the trail as fast as possible. In the end on the steep scramble down to the road I had to wait for stray light from passing cars to climb the last few meters. This time I just wanted to go to Deeks Bluff, but while I was trying to decide where to start I wanted to...
