A Climb of Bavarian Peak
This year I attended the Alpine club GMC again. It began to rain lightly as we waited to fly into camp. The rest of Saturday it sprinkled from time to time. As is the practice, before dinner the climbs for the next day were posted. Because of the uncertain weather I signed up for what seemed to be the easiest trip, Hidden Peak, described as a 2km one way meandering meadow hike with some short roping on the summit ridge. No iceax was called for so I thought I could use my hiking boots. Sunday the weather was supposed to improve, but there were only a few very small blue holes in the clouds and almost as soon as we began walking it sprinkled again, enough to make the rocks completely wet. From camp I had seen a diagonal rock slide leading in the direction of Hidden Peak, but the guide turned up some rock slabs in the opposite direction. I didn't like the weather and the route and was becoming cold hands and wanted to use this as an excuse to turn around. However several participants offered me spare gloves and mitts, so I decided to continued and regretted it all the way.

The slabs became steeper and soon we were making ever more exposed traverses with hardly a plant in sight. Meadow walk? When we came to some slippery greenery on the outside of an old moraine my boots found no traction. When one other guy lent me one of his trekking poles I gripped it above the basket for an insecure handhold. We then came into ever more snow, some exposed too, but the others had made good steps. finally we rounded a ridge and saw Hidden Lake far below with the peak across the big cirque. The guides discussed the recommended route, then decided to go up Bavarian which was not far above...
