We wanted a short hike that would take two or three hours, on our way to the Chilliwack valley. So this year Jayne came up with the idea of investigating Taggart Peak via the Abby Grind trail.

By the time we got to the trailhead it was noon. It was a hot day. The parking lot had about 25 cars in it. Very popular trail. We started up the trail, amid constant gunfire from the nearby Abbotsford gun range which is just west of the trailhead.

The trail was a steady climb, but not difficult. We met 10 or 15 other parties. We reached the lookout at 440m where we had lunch on the big rock. There were 2 other parties there at the time.

I was then able to talk my daughter Chilko into going a bit further toward Taggart Peak. And Jayne was willing so we continued. The trail beyond the lookout was less steep and was quite pretty. There were lots of stinging nettles along the trail, but it never caused me any problem, even though I was wearing shorts. We met only one other party on the whole upper stretch. And we were beyond the sound of the gun range.

Finally we reached the first closed contour on the ridge, at about 590m. This was as far as we decided to go, as Chilko had already turned back.
