A strenuous day trip
The first time I attempted Ipsoot was with a large club party. It may have been a combined ACC BCMC trip, several participants were members of both clubs. We had to start skiing near the highway, than after about 5 miles turned up along a fairly large creek. The route soon became steeper and led into a narrow very steep gully. This was the crux. Above that the valley became a bit flatter and the creek more covered. We made camp a little below treeline. It had been a dull day with a few sprinkles. Sunday was no better. Some people headed up into the clouds, but I stayed in camp with the majority. We then packed up soon and headed home. I dont think anybody made it to the peak that day.

1982 was a great year for ski touring. Lots of snow in the winter, then many perfect spring weekends. After the Pemberton Icecap traverse,
where we saw all the major peaks of this area in the distance I was able to cross several off my most wanted list, including Ipsoot. I left town early and was able to drive the plowed road all the way to the creek crossing. I started skiing at 8am. The crux was more difficult than I remembered. Obviously following a set track had been easier too. Above that skinning up became much easier and I soon changed to shorts.

The glacier was a bit more complex than it looked on the map with huge wind cirques along the edge. I reached the summit in 4 1/4 hours, just in time for lunch. Under a cloudless sky I took photos all around and enjoyed a long break. [photo]img504.jpg[caption]The Summit ridge with Rainbow at...
