Exact track log of route up Silverdaisy, including shortcuts
I wanted to get an exact track log of the route up Silverdaisy, showing all the cutoffs. We parked at the highway. It was 9:11 AM. Skied through the picnic area to the bridge. At the east end of the bridge is a yellow gate. The gate was locked. The gate stuck above the snow about 1 foot, so it was easy to step over. Just before the gate was some mounds under the snow, probably the cement blocks described in previous bulletins. So it doesn't look like you could drive up the road in summer, even if the gate was open.

I stepped over the gate and crossed the bridge over the Skagit River. Beyond that, I skied up the road. (Cayoose Creek road). For the first 2 km or so, the road uns southeast, going up the Skagit river. It parallels the highway which also climbs on the opposite side of the Skagit river. It is a gradual climb. There was about 80 cm of snow.

At 10:12, an hour after I started, I reached the point where the road takes a 90 degree turn and leaves the Skagit drainage to go up Smitheram creek. Now the road was steeper. I soon got into the sunshine, and was skiing with just a light white shirt. I expected that after I climbed about 500 feet from this corner, I'd see a switchback leading to the "upper" road shown on both the 1:50K and also Open Street Map. But I saw no evidence of this road. So I continued up the lower road which is quite close to Smitheram creek. At 11:09 I got to the bottom of the 2 switchbacks shown on the map, elevation 1280m. At this point the road leaves Smitheram creek

After 2 switchbacks I was at 1340m and again climbing gradually southwest. At 11:48 I reached 1440m (Point Y) and had lunch. Somewhere ahead of me were Betsy and Steve. After my lunch, I continued up the road thru a couple of clearcuts to 1520m. This is the first point...
