A brisk, early season day trip up Big Dog Mountain.
This trip was part of a three day weekend. I phoned Randy Stoltmann to see what he was doing for the weekend, but he had left a recorded message he was going to the Kitilope wilderness. So instead, I went on a trip with Ross Wyborn and his gang.

From the place we parked the car, we climbed the steep slopes above the road, and headed up. In a little more than an hour, we were on top of Peak 8541 (51:01.8-122:34.3). From there we decided to dash across the great windswept plateau that lay before us, and reach the summit of Big Dog Mountain itself. There was very little snow, and apart from the snapping cold wind, I was able to wear shorts most of the way.

Coming back from the peak we dropped into the bowl at 51:02.5-122:34 and thus avoided climbing Peak 8541 and were back at the car well before dark. I picked up some interesting jade green rock samples for my 5 year old son, Wolf, which he still talks about. On the way home, Peter secured a pass for us to visit the secret "Waldon North" fortified mansion and machine shop that is built into the mountain just past Lillooet.

One final thing I remember about that weekend was that when I got home, Peter phoned me to say that the news was that Randy Stoltmann had died in the Kitilope. See Randy Stoltmann...
