The original approach to Mamquam Mountain
Mamquam Lk is usually approached from Diamond Head area in a long day, that makes this a 3 day trip. From the lake follow the outlet stream or ski through the obvious gap in the low ridge south off the lake. Cross to broad flat valley of upper Skookum Cr towards the SE. Ascend steep forest towards the area of GR066161(el.4900). Ascend open slopes towards Pk GR082162(el.7400) and traverse around its north slopes along countour 6700. From the edge of the icefield the summit appears to be much further than 4km to the SE. Not recommended in unsettled weather, poor visibility or unstable snow conditions. It is also possible to traverse more or less horizontaly from Skookum Cr flats to the creek coming from lake GR082129 and thus gain the standard route from the west. Note that the valley at GR051160 is actually a prominent rock butte. The traverse begins in the narrow valley SE of this butte. ( In the late 80's, when the Skookum Cr road was drivable to the end, we used this route to approach the Garibaldi neve in an easy half day! )

2005 Note: With the road along Skookum Cr deactivated, washed out and quite overgrown Mamquam Lk is again an atractive approach....
