PhotoDescr: The rope? Yes, why the rope. We had about two hours sleep after a midnight hike in, a 4 a. m. start, and mice crawling all over us. At one point a small one actually crawled into my open, snoring mouth. Nightmares of the final scene of 1984 with the rats . . . ANYWAY, we were bagged, the ice was full of air and rock and, whatever, we didn't need a rope. We felt silly. We only put in a couple of screws, but we did go the direct way up. Anyway, those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them.

The plan was to knock off Matier and maybe Joffre as well, but after the lower section of Slalok, the good climbing turned to 8 inches of powder on top of ice, a bit insecure, so we went back down to have a swim and a nap. Nice day out. A few folks about(!)
