Surf's Up! - Snowpatch Spire # 6567

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2003.08.01
Vantage Point: From the alcove at the top of pitch 3

Caption: Adrian Field following pitch 3 of Surf's Up on Snowpatch Spire

PhotoDescr: This is the routefinding crux of this great route. The big corner that you climb on pitches 1 and 2 (and which is the main feature for finding the start of this route) is to Adrian's right (the shadow). To his left are some slings which are the 2nd belay.

The main thing to remember on this pitch is to STAY IN THE CORNER (climber's Right from the 2nd belay). If you take the more tempting and plausible option of going up climber's left you will be in for more fun than you bargained for. . . . The very tempting clean streak of granite leading left from the 2nd belay is visible in this picture and I nearly made that mistake dont get suckered into it. STAY RIGHT IN THE CORNER!

From the alcove where I'm sitting an easy and kinda fun traverse pitch leads climber's right (south) to the beautiful Surf's Up ledge and from there it's all fun and games!

Another thing about this picture is that the orange rope is running through the 5.9 crux of the pitch. . . . It's a bit of a one-move wonder and I think this route is pretty soft at 5.9, but others might disagree. Anyway, do this route! The 3 pitches above Surf's Up ledge are not to be missed.
