Coquihalla Mountain - North Side in Winter # 6342

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2005.02.11
Vantage Point: From Needle Peak

Caption: Coquihalla Mountain north side in winter

PhotoDescr: The main massif of Coquihalla is at right. Jim Kelly is the isolated peak just left of the main mass of Coquihalla. Illal Peak is the flat-topped summit partially out of photo at extreme left. Way in the distance through the Coquihalla-Jim Kelly gap is Cathedral Ridge in Cathedral Park.

Taken on a solo winter wander up Needle Peak on a Friday, a very good day to be outside. I have heard that there is a lot of snowmobile activity around Coquihalla in the winter but I heard no evidence of this, so it might be a good place for a Friday ski. You'd probably want to come in from the Tulameen side because the pipeline road is not plowed.

The north face of Coquihalla might make for a good winter route; although it does not have striking ice lines, the volcanic rock should be frozen together and provide better climbing than in summer.
