Stanley PK North Face - Kahl Route # 4459

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: Sept 27-2003
Vantage Point: From the Stanley Glacier Trail

Caption: The North Face of Stanley Peak from the valley.

PhotoDescr: The Kahl route (Grade III) goes directly up the snow and ice just left of the summit. It is a popular route and on many occasions I have seen people on it while driving by on the Hwy. Most of the route is visible except for a bit of the lower portion just above the glacier.

I had intended to hike up the opposite side the valley in order to get a good shot of the N face and glacier, but by the time we were up there the sun was shining directly behind Stanley so the picture would not have worked. This was the best shot of the N face that day.

Took this when Amy, our son Brydon, and myself hiked up the Stanley Glacier trail. Good portions of the hike were through burned out forest and fallen trees as the Tokumn Creek Fire managed to burn this far up from Tokumn Creek this summer. When we got to the trailhead there were other people already on the trail, and there was red tape and an old barricade which appeared to have been pushed aside. There was a page of paper taped to the trailhead signboard with very unclear details that made it seem like this area was open, so we assumed it was and hiked up there. However, when we got back to the vehicle the tape and barricade had been put back up and we had a warning from the ranger on our windshield not to enter closed areas. Apparently the fire hazard is still extreme.
