Jacobsen Glacier Labelled Mini-Panorama # 4187

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2003.04.??
Vantage Point: From the top of West Jacobsen Mountain's SE couloir

Caption: The Southern Lobe of the Upper Jacobsen Glacier, from high on West Jacobsen Mountain.

PhotoDescr: West Jacobsen Mountain provided an outstanding viewpoint from which to view the majority of the Monarch Icefield. Visible in the photo is camp 3 of our 13 day 'roving base camp' style ski trip to the Monarch Icefield. We set up this camp in a whiteout after battling a ferocious storm while traveling from the Cerberus Mountain area to this location below Mt. Satan. Our maps and GPS told us we were a fair distance from the base of the mountain, but when we looked up on our first clear morning we got a bit worried about the stability of Mt. Satan's upper slopes. From this vantage point, however, it looks like it would take a pretty big avalanche to hit our camp.

The day after this photo was taken we went for a morning outing and ascended the NW side of Mt. Satan and skied down the benchy, crevassed slopes above our camp before packing up and moving to our next camp location.
