Looking Down SE Ridge of Devils Dome # 4182

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2003.08
Vantage Point: From

Caption: Stan at the top of the roped pitches of the SE ridge route on Devils Dome. One cannot see the route from this vantage as it drops almost straight down from where Stan is sitting. The summit was a short scramble away up fun slabs.

PhotoDescr: The southeast ridge of Devils Dome is rated II 5.5 in the Putnam guide, but would probably be one or two grades higher by today's standards, which is the norm for 1970s Valhallas grading. A fun climb. Sticking to the true, exposed crest of the climb ensures more solid rock and better positions (one is tempted into a grassy terrace area on the second pitch, but this should be avoided).

Taken during a five-day trip to the Devils Range of the Valhallas.
