Telemarking the Fitzsimmons Range # 3944

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2002.05.06
Vantage Point: From Lesser Flute

Caption: Rita Rice enjoying freshies directly below the summit of Lesser Flute in the Fitzsimmons Range. -15C and 35cm fresh on a spring base...and it's May 6th, of course. Sometimes you've got to enjoy the Coast Range.

PhotoDescr: After a good backcountry season, mother nature smiled a little more on those not ready to give up on a season of skiing. After an evening of heavy precipitation and unseasonably cool temperatures, a few hardy souls headed for the high country under a dark sky.

Before noon, the ski brightened and the sun broke through. While the valley below was cloud-covered, those on the hill made best use of the untracked powder, which seemed all the better given the lateness of the season.

Here, Rita makes a second run from the col between Lesser Flute and Flute Summit in the Fitzsimmons Range behind Whistler Mountain. This is a favourite area with Whistler area backcountry skiers.

While still the domain of tourers and telemarkers, this area is slated to be developed by Intrawest, who secured a concession from BC Parks and the Lands Ministry last year that will allow them to erect one or two lifts in this area.
