Purple People Eaters # 187

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 1994.09.15
Vantage Point: From base of route

Caption: The first pitch of Purple People Eater on the East Face of Alpaca Peak. Dave Vocadlo, belayed by Ann-Marie Conway, climbs the first pitch of Purple People Eater towards the huge leaning dihedral/roof which is the major feature of the east face.

PhotoDescr: The pitch went at 5.8 with absolutely no pro, which wasn't really a big deal to Dave. John Simms and I somewhat more sensibly traversed in from left along the dihedral/roof. The second pitch continued right to a belay at the end of and above the roof (5.7). I was pretty psyched to be doing some alpine new routing and the circumstances really blew me away. I was lucky enough to take a good picture early in my photographic career that I feel really captures the feeling of pioneering a new route in the fantastic Anderson River Range - blue sky and big granite. The roof looming above gives a sense of apprehension but in fact we snuck around it on the right at 5.7.
