Ptarmigan in Wilcox Pass # 1837

Caption: This ptarmigan is beginning to change to its summer plumage.

PhotoDescr: Two ptarmigan were spotted on the return from a climb of Wilcox. This one is apparently a male White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucurus), which is very similar to, but smaller than, the Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus). The male has a red spot over its eye during breeding season; it appears to be developing on this specimen. Ptarmigan are members of the grouse family.
