Whitworth and Finlayson from Sumallo/Payne Col # 13972

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2010.07.10
Vantage Point: From the col between Sumallo Peak (Rideout's Pup) and Payne.

Caption: A south-southeast view towards Whitworth, with Finlayson a small bump further along its ridge. Jack Mountain is in the distance rear left and I think Wright Peak could be the mountain front left of it. Devils Tongue is far right.

PhotoDescr: I joined a North Shore Hikers group on a trip to Mount Payne. We bushwhacked up its south ridge from the Silver-Skagit Road and enjoyed some good scrambling further up with a couple of Class 3 sections (a buttress looks difficult but presents routes when close up).

For the return the decision was made to head down to the Sumallo-Payne col and follow gullies down for a while. This took us a little off route as we had to cross steep meadows and small gullies in order to regain the south ridge below the buttress.

Lots of mosquitoes from the treeline down had us keeping on the move as much as possible and my route finding skills suffered a little in the dense forest, due to the urge to just go with what looked good (I meandered from one side of the lower broad ridge to the other a little more than was necessary).

Cold beer at the bottom had us forget about the mosquitoes for a little while, but the bites were a reminder for the next couple of days.
