Guard Pass # 1328

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2001.12.30
Vantage Point: From

Caption: Sandra Nicol and Brian Peter grab a snack at Guard Pass. Guard Mountain is behind.

PhotoDescr: I reached the pass first. I took off my skis and pack and went to take a peak off the other side when I stumbled upon a mountain goat. I retreated to grab my camera. As I approached the goat with my camera ready, I slipped on an icy rock and landed on my ass with a loud thud, scaring the goat away. Fortunately, I was not seriously hurt, but a really good photograph had gotten away. From Guard Pass, we skied to near the top of Deception Peak and had a fabulous ski run down the Guard Glacier.

The Previous day we had skied into the Sphinx hut. Garibaldi Lake was frozen, but there was no snow covering the 4-6 inches of ice. The Lake make scary pinging sounds as the ice flexed while we skied along it. There was a large crack extending down the centre of the lake running from Sphinx Bay nearly to Price Bay. Needless to say, we stayed several hundred meters north of the crack as we skied along.

We planned to continue across the Garibaldi Neve the next day, but the weather broke down and we retreated to Taylor Meadows for New Years Eve.
