Gros Morne in Winter # 12452

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2009.03.14
Vantage Point: From South side of Ferry Gulch

Caption: View of south side of Gros Morne in winter

PhotoDescr: I had an opportunity to get out to the west coast of Newfoundland for a meeting and field trip to the Lewis Hills. Unfortunately, the field trip did not materialise because harsh winds kept the helicopter grounded and so all we had was the meeting. But, I stayed on for an extra day to get out while the opportunity presented itself. I set as my objective to get to the top of Gros Morne which only took me three hours from the car. That gave me a bit of time to look around so I snowshoed my way across the valley. I took this picture from the south side of Ferry Gulch when the clouds parted for a moment.

The "standard route" up Gros Morne follows the couloir that leads to the middle of the photo. I followed the ridge to the right of that route since it afforded compacted crampon-friendly snow. My route was a bit more exposed but it did lead more directly to the mountain top.
