Sunrise over the Sunwapta Valley # 10267

Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo.
Date: 2007.09.08
Vantage Point: From North Glacier of Mount Athabasca

Caption: The Icefields Parkway is still in the dark when sunrise is touching the peaks on both sides of the upper valley of the Sunwapta River.

PhotoDescr: The near peak on the right is Wilcox Peak, with Tangle Ridge behind it and Sunwapta Peak the high point on the right skyline further back. All three of these peaks are in Alan Kane's Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies. The Tangle and Wilcox routes are both reached from Wilcox Pass, to the right of Wilcox.

At the far end of the valley in the centre is Endless Chain Ridge, with the Sunwapta River in the valley below, and the Icefields Centre in deep shadow at the base of Wilcox. The Icefields Parkway runs along the valley bottom.

On the left side are peaks of the Winston Churchill Range. The peak on the centre-left skyline with dark cloud above it is probably Mushroom Peak. Mount Athabasca's North Glacier is in the foreground.

After we turned around at the ramp on Mount Athabasca's normal route, I finally had enough time and light to get out my camera.
