FtrHistory: Too famous and storied to be done justice by a brief entry here, this was on the two main access routes to the Klondike goldfields during the Rush of '98; the other was the White Pass. One of the great images from that era is of a precarious line of men, roped together, climbing a steep grade in the frozen snowscapes of a mountain pass; that pass was the Chilkoot. There are several detailed histories recounting the many epic tales and horrors of this route, one of the most readable being Pierre Berton's "Klondike". Visitors to the Seattle area are encouraged to visit the Klondike US Nat'l Historic Site in Pioneer Square, which is a storefront museum concerning the Klondike Gold Rush and of course those lucky enough to visit the far north will find plenty to learn about in Skagway, Haines, Whitehorse or Dawson City - the last-named being the destination of the hordes of men who made it - or tried to make it - over the Chilkoot and White Passes. All sought gold; many found famine and freezing cold and death.....
