This peak is #2 in Prominence List for Montana .McDonald Peak is the highest point in the Mission Range in northwestern Montana. There are a couple of small glaciers on the north side of the mountain. The normal approach is from the west via a gravel road along Ashley Creek. From the road, a trail leads to Ashley lake. From here you need to skirt cliff bands to gain the basin south of McDonald Peak and then West MacDonald's south ridge. The ridge between the two summits is exposed and knify.
