This peak is #4 in Prominence List for California .San Gorgonio is the highest mountain in southern California and since it is the highest point in a region which is separated from higher peaks (e.g. in the Sierra Nevada) by low terrain, it is one of the most topographically prominent peaks in the United States, ranked 7th among peaks in the contiguous US, and 18th among all US peaks.

Most of the mountain is forested, with only the upper reaches above the tree line. The summit is a walk from all directions with trails leading to the summit from several directions.

Name Notes: Spanish missionaries in the area named the peak in the early 1800s after Saint Gorgonius.
