This peak is #41 in Prominence List for Washington .A great view point on the east side of Ross Lake.
A 4.7 mile trail from the lake leads to the summit, 4,500 feet higher. It is also possible to hike from Lightning Creek campground - and adding another 2 miles each way to the journey.
There is a campsite on Desolation about a mile from the lookout summit.
Jack Kerouac spent the summer of 1956 on the summit of Desolation, working as a fire lookout for 63 days, where he also wrote novels and poems.
