Empetrum Peak - South View
A minor summit to the north of The Black Tusk in Garibaldi Provincial Park. Empetrum ridge extends north of the tusk for a few kilometres, dividing the Empetrum Creek Valley from the Helm Creek Valley. It's rarely visited but provides interesting meadow and krummholtz complexes. In winter, there are decent routes off the southwest ridge. Empetrum is interesting geologically in that it is a granitic outcropping in an otherwise volcanic area. If the Black Tusk had not erupted, most of the Black Tusk area would resemble Empetrum. The high point of the ridge is known as Empetrum Peak, and is, on its own, a fine hiking destination, either from the Black Tusk Microwave Road or via the Helm Creek Trail accessed from the Cheakamus Lake Trail. Empetrum Ridge provides good views, with its most notable feature being the fine views of the north face of Black Tusk.
