Mount Strachan is now part of the Cypress Bowl downhill ski area. A ski lift leads to its south west sub-summit. From the sub-summit, one can drop to the col, then can climb the final summit. It offers a spectacular view of greater Vancouver, especially at night. Name Notes: In Vancouver the name is usually pronounced "Strawn". However, people in Scotland sent the following email: "I note with interest your assertion that the correct pronunciation of 'Strachan' is "strawn". I have to take issue with you on this point and suggest that you ask the highly respected manager of Celtic Football Club in Glasgow, a famous Scottish international and Manchester United footballer . . . his name is Gordon Strachan and is pronounced universally (well, in the UK anyway!) as it is spelt . . . with the 'ch' soft as in 'loch'. Having spent most of my life in Scotland (and climbed extensively there), I have never heard the pronounciation you descibed." |
