Mount Habel (Formerly Rhondda North)
This is the peak between Mt. Rhondda and Mt. Baker, on the continental divide. It appears on the Yoho National Park topo. The elevation is given as 3073 m on the 1975 Inland Waters Directorate map of Peyto Glacier; we use the TRIM height of 3087 m It should be clear to anyone who has been there that the route description for Mt. Rhondda in "Rocky Mountains of Canada South" applies to this peak.

Name Notes: Known for years as "North Rhondda," the name was suggested in 1984 by Graeme Pole, and made official in 1985. Pole found out about the name approval when he read of it in "Place Names of the Canadian Alps", published 1990. Jean Habel (AHH-bull) was a German mathematician. His 1897 party was the first to set foot on the Wapta Icefield. They ascended onto the Yoho Glacier. J.N. Collie applied the name Mount Habel to the peak now known as Mont des Poilus. The name was changed after WWI due to anti-German sentiment. It seemed remarkable that, in the 1980s, an unnamed peak remained in the vicinity to commemorate Jean Habel, so the name suggestion was made. Jean Habel is also commemorated in the naming of Habel Creek, north of Columbia Icefield.
