Name Notes: J.N. Collie named Wilcox Pass in 1899. The mountain takes its name from proximity. It is remarkable that W.D. Wilcox climbed his namesake mountain in 1896 and failed to "discover" the Columbia Icefield, just across the way.
There is a decided difference of opinion whether this feature is officially Wilcox Peak or Mount Wilcox. The Canadian Geographic Names Database, maintained by the federal government, lists Wilcox Peak as the official name, and that is the name that appears on the NTS map of the area. But Place Names of Alberta Volume 1, published by the Alberta Government, gives the name as Mount Wilcox.
Since the mountain is within the province of Alberta, and within a national park, both levels of government have a legitimate interest in the name. In order to avoid confusion with Mount Wilcox in Colorado, the Canadian Mountain Encyclopedia will use Wilcox Peak as the base name.
