This peak is #12 in Prominence List for New Mexico .Capitan Mountain is the unofficial name for the highpoint of the Capitan Mountains in central New Mexico. To the east is a lower summit named Capitan Peak (3073 m). From the west, a road leads to radio towers on the summit. Also, a trail from the the east goes to the summit.

This is the highest summit on the main ridge of the Capitan Mountains and is only unofficially "Capitan Mountain". There is a benchmark to the west which is slightly lower and taken by some to be the summit (which it isn't). This higher summit is distinguished on USGS maps by the proximity to a label "Figure Seven", apparently a reference to a "7-shaped" clearing on the south side of the ridge immediately south of this summit.
