Mount Richard Bennett
(Goodell) Mount Richard Bennnett is located on the western wall of the Kiwa Glacier, about 2 km north of the larger Mount Sir John Abbott. It could in some ways be viewed as a continuation of the same ridge as Abbott, with a drop of less than 500 feet to the Bennett-Abbott col. The mountain is often climbed without difficulty from the col between Abbott and Bennett.

Name Notes: The mountain was named after the conservative Prime Minister Bennett who was born July 3, 1870, at Hopewell Hill, N.B. He became prime minister from 1930 to 1935 - as the great depression set in. (This Bennett is not to be confused with WAC Bennett, Premier of BC). Many historians agree he was one of the most hated prime ministers ever. His famous "make work" camps for the unemployed led up to the "On to Ottawa" march of 1935. This march was the source of numerous pictures in history textbooks showing trainloads of unemployed riding on the tops of boxcars. Eventually the organizer of the march, Arthur (Slim) Evans and 4 others were chosen as delegates to speak to the Prime Minister, while hundreds of others were retained by armed RCMP officers in a giant arena Regina. Upon reaching Ottawa, Evans called Bennett a "liar" to his face, effectively ending the meeting, and armed RCMP officers promptly disbanded the march at gunpoint. Bennett's inability to overcome the effects of the Depression led to his defeat in the federal election which marked the return to power of liberal Mackenzie King.
