SE. of Mount Saugstad, Range 3, Coast Land District There has been confusion as to the date and party of the first ascent. The West Peak was climbed in 1953 by John L. Dudra, Waldemar "Fips" Broda, and Jack Atkinson. In some books this has been confused with an ascent of the east peak. It now appears that the higher East Peak was first climbed only in 1958 by J. Wilson; A. Steck; and F. Burnett.
In 1953, the Vancouver Province ran a series of four articles about the four ascents that the above mentioned mountaineers completed. The articles were written by Paddy Sherman and appeared from Fri. July 31 to Tues. August 4, 1953. In one of those articles, it describes their ascent of Mt. Jacobsen.
The other source is a book titled "Pushing the Limits: The Story of Canadian Mountaineering" by Chic Scott. On page 228 the book also credits Dudra, Broda and Atkinson with the first ascent of Mt. Jacobsen in 1953.
Verification of the 1953 ascent of the West peak only has been obtained from Mr. Waldemar "Fips" Broda who is still living and resides in West Vancouver. There is also an Alpine Journal article in 1954 titled "North of Monarch" by John L. Dudra. Unfortunately John Dudra was later killed in a plane crash at the age of 32.
