This peak is #10 on the Height List for Oregon . This peak is #7 in Prominence List for Oregon .Steens Mountain, located in southeastern Oregon, is really a mountain range rather than a single mountain. The range is about 80 km long (north to south) and 25 km wide. It is a fault-block range, similar to but much smaller than California's Sierra Nevada, with a long, gradual western slope and a precipitous eastern slope. The ridge crest exceeds a height of 9000 feet (2743 m) for 12 km, and the 3 highest points are here listed as distinct mountains (Steens, Steens N3, and Steens N11).

Name Notes: Named in 1860 for Major Enoch Steen of the U.S. Army, who carried out a campaign against the Paiute Indians on the mountain.
