Name Notes: Amor de Cosmos was British Columbia's first (second?) Premier. Formerly William Smith of Nova Scotia, he had lived in California during the '49 Gold Rush and been an active participant in politics there. He had his name changed by act of the California legislature; it is Latin for "lover of the universe". In British Columbia he launched a political career as publisher of the Victoria Colonist and used it as a "liberal" platform to assail the autocratic government of Governor James Douglas, which was perceived as being too protective of natives, Asians and blacks as well as being resistant to the concept of responsible government. De Cosmos is one of the more colourful politicians in British Columbia history; anyone who thinks recent governments have been "the most corrupt in the province's history" as the newspapers like to claim should have a read-up on De Cosmos and his contemporaries....
