Mission Peak - West Side
Mission Peak is a prominent triangular/pyramidal if somewhat gentle summit standing out from about midway along Mission Ridge, sticking up distinctly from the shoulder-like flanks of the upper ridge. To its south, it towers over Seton Lake by over 7000' even though as a peak it is not much higher than adjoining parts of the ridge; to its north it stands above the Camoo Creek basin and over the high alpine basin of Moon Lake.

Name Notes: The name Mission Peak refers to the old Oblate Mission at Shalalth; Mission Mountain more refers to the pass to the west of the Ridge, i.e. Mission Pass. The colloquial names "the Teat" and "the Nipple" derive from the St'at'imcets name for this peak, Schkaum, and refer to the shape of the peak and also emulate the meaning of the original St'at'imcets name. When dusted with first snows, it stands out prominently from adjoining parts of the ridge which are more craggy and less peaklike and so catch the snow less, or less noticeably. The behaviour of weather around Mission Peak is often used to gauge oncoming weather conditions in Shalalth and the Portage; this peak in particular is something of a "weather pivot" directing the traffic of clouds and storms transiting the confluence of valleys here. Hikers on Mission Ridge should take note of near-incessant high winds and highly changeable weather, despite the ridge's fairly benign terrain.
