How to Compare Different Maps for Accuracy

In the old days, you could assume that a 1:20,000 map had more detail than a 1:50,000, and that a map with 20m contours had more detail than one with 40m contours. But it is becoming increasingly obvious that this simple comparison can mislead you. You can blow up any map to any scale, and a computer can generate any number of contours.
