The Alberta Government is proposing to protect areas within the Bighorn Country.

( The area mainly encompasses the Highway 11 east entrance to Jasper/Banff National Park).

  Proposed Protected Areas

  Current state of the Bighorn area

 Successful acceptance of the proposal would create the following:

 * One new wildland provincial park ( A Wildland Park is open to hunting, fishing and trapping )
 * 3 new provincial parks
 * 4 new provincial recreation areas.

The Government's reasoning for protecting these areas:

* Protection for the headwaters of the North Saskatchewan River and Red Deer River which provide drinking water to over one million Albertans in downstream communities.

* Tourism development.
