Two climbers die in Jasper avalanche on Mount Athabasca
EDMONTON - Two men have died in an avalanche on Mount Athabasca near the Columbia Icefields.
Jasper RCMP said Parks Canada first initiated a search Thursday afternoon after a returning climbing party reported seeing two climbers in the area immediately prior to an avalanche.
A vehicle belonging to the climbers was found in a parking lot, and subsequent inquiries revealed they had not checked into their hotel room for the evening.
Searchers found a climbing rope at the mouth of a crevasse filled with avalanche debris around 8:30 Thursday evening, and the area was secured until Friday morning when daylight allowed recovery efforts to continue.
The bodies of the men have been taken to hospital for identification.
Jasper National Park wardens and the Jasper RCMP are continuing their investigation.
