Slate Range
Parent Area: Front Ranges

Area: 157 sq km. Location: The Slate Range is located northeast of the town of Lake Louise. Its western boundary is the lower reach of the Pipestone River and the Bow River below Lake Louise. The eastern boundary is Baker Creek. The northern boundary is the Little Pipestone River and the headwaters of the Red Deer River at Red Deer Lakes. The "slate" of the Slate Range is elements of the Miette Group of sedimentary rocks, the oldest rock commonly visible in this part of the Rockies. Terrain: This compact range is a mountaineer's delight, offering many non-technical ascents, a few fourth class routes, a couple of glacier routes, and a couple of north faces. Many of the easy routes are viable in summer and winter. The highest point is Mount Richardson (3086 m). Another pleasing feature of the area is its multitude of lakes. The range contains is a geologic transition from eastern main ranges to the younger front ranges. The transition takes place along the Pipestone Pass thrust fault, just west of Deception Pass. History: The Dominion Topographic Survey made some first ascents in 1906. Other first ascents were made in 1909, 1911, and from the ACC annual camp in the Ptarmigan Valley in 1915. The party of J.F. Porter explored the area in 1911, naming many features and drawing attention to the Skoki Valley. "Skokie" is an aboriginal word for "marsh." Skoki Lodge opened in 1931 and ski mountaineering subsequently became established in the area.
