Kootenay Area
Parent Area: Western North America

Area: 42705 sq km.This area is defined for the purposes of the Bivouac hierarchial maps, and is divided from the South Rockies by the Rocky Mountain trench west. As such, it includes Cranbrook, but does not include the Elk river valley (Fernie). Note that there is also a loose definition of "East Kootenays" which goes all the way to the Alberta border, and includes the Elk river valley, which drains into Kootenay River. The area borders in Bivouac are usually valleys, whereas the area borders for tourists are usually mountain peaks.
