Caption: The comforting, solid peaks of Hozomeen Mountain. Little Jackass mountain is in the foreground (woodsy rounded peak).

Story: Admired by Mowich campers, revered by climbers, immortalized by Jack Kerouac, Hozomeen Mountain stands over 8,000 ft and dominates the southern horizon from the vantage point of Desolation Peak Lookout. We spied its sharp peaks as we canoed around Ross Lake over six days, during the first week of August 2005. Standing in front of it - so near it yet so far - was one of the most impressive moments of my week-long visit to Ross Lake.
