Caption: View of the north face (left) and north ridge (center) of Mt. Conness (12,590 ft) from the east ridge, looking west across the Conness glacier; north eastern edge of Yosemite National Park, California. Story: Mt. Conness via Sawmill Meadows, Alpine Lake, and the east ridge is a Class 2-3 scramble that can be done in a long day. On this particular jaunt we were racing against some foul weather and an hour or so after reaching the summit were caught in a thunderstorm while still on the ridge. We got off the ridge and managed to weather out the worst of storm, but at one point there was so much static electricity from the lightning that the air literally buzzed, and my climbing companion's hair (which was very thick and kinky) tried to stand on end with a fair amount of success. Terrifying but strangely invigorating! To see the actual photo you must be a Paid Member |
