| Golden Ears and Edge Peak from the North Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo. Story: This photo is inserted mainly because there are no others on the Bivouac site showing the standard route on the Golden Ears. The day was as grey as the photo shows: dull, and later soggy. In fact it was a really weird weather day. Fog and low cloud filled the valleys, there was a clear band between about 4000 and 11,000 feet and then threatening overrunning cloud layers above that turned to rain later in the day. We climbed out of the valley cloud to get this view of the summit, and on the summit itself we were treated to interesting views of the surrounding peaks poking out of a cottony cloud bed (see the "Descending the Golden Ears" Photo Essay I've posted). The hiking route up the Ears follows the broad ridge facing the camera, then crosses the upper snowfield to the left skyline just below the final rock pyramid. You can basically keep your hands in your pockets, but an ice axe is nice to have for a decent glissade. Supposedly there is a shelter fairly near where this photo was taken, but I have not yet found it on several desultory searches. To see the actual photo you must be a Paid Member |
