| This peak is located just 3 km northwest of Stuart Knob. This peak is a relatively flat topped peak, with a communications tower on the summit (marked com). On newer 1:50,000 maps, this exact summit is labelled clearly as "Protection Mountain", but at the same time they try to hedge their bets by sprawling "Protection Mountain" across the ridge to the north. Name Notes: The name "Protection Mountain" is an old name first applied by James Porter to an entire ridge in this area. Since there are several "peaks" on the ridge, this caused endless confusion. In 1982, the government finally pinned the name "Protection Mountain" on the highest point of the ridge, at the south end. (Where there is a communications tower). However, afraid to really take a stand and clean things up, they have hedged their bets by also continuing to sprawl the name "Protection Mountain" across the entire 7 km ridge between here and the northernmost peak. See also Bulwark Peak.It appears from the 1:50,000 map that the government has now decided to conform with Bivouac policy of designating mountains as a single point, rather than trying to sprawl the name across an entire ridge. The name "television peak" was used as an alternate name for this if one is having a discussion about which peak is really protection mountain. |
