A rapidly receding pocket glacier located on the north side of the mountain offers an easy route to the summit.

Frequent bus service from Mexico City (TAPO bus terminal) runs east to the industrial city of Puebla. From there, another bus runs to the village of Tlachichuca, the normal staging point for Orizaba. Several reliable outfitters in Tlachichuca offer accomodation and 4-wheel drive rides to the Piedra Grande, a stone hut located at 4200 m on the north side of the mountain.

Name Notes: The Aztec name for this mountain is "Citlaltepetl" which means "Star Mountain". The last known eruption occured in 1846.
