This peak is #10 on the Height List for Alaska . This peak is #2 in Prominence List for Alaska . This peak is #1 on the Height List for British Columbia . This peak is #1 in Prominence List for British Columbia . Mount Fairweather is located at the point where the BC-Alaska border juts SW toward the coast, before jogging inland toward Skagway. It is the highest mountain in British Columbia. It is only 23 km from Lituya Bay, on the open Pacific Ocean, and thus is subjected to year-round storms. Heavy snowfall accumulations have created numerous fast-flowing glaciers along its flanks. The terrain surrounding the mountain is wild and rugged, and only a handfull of parties attempt to reach the summit each year. The mountain is in the middle of a perpetual low pressure area, with the pressure almost 10% lower than other mountains of similar height. Its slopes are typically 50 degrees on all sides. The west ridge, however, offers a non-technical route to the summit.

Name Notes: The mountain was named by Captain James Cook in 1778, because of fair weather after a period of prolonged storms.

Fairweather Mountain adopted in the 18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1924, as labelled on BC map 1H, 1917; not "Mount Fairweather" as adopted in 1922 by United States Board on Geographic Names (since adjusted to Fairweather Mountain in U.S. records). Named in 1778 by Captain James Cook presumably because of the good weather encountered at the time of his visit (Journals... 1785, vol 2, p.345). The name has been variously translated: "Mt. Beautemps" by La Pérouse, 1786; "Mte. Buen-tiempo" by Galiano, 1802; "Gor[a]-Khoroshy-pogody" on Russian Hydrographic Chart 1378, 1847; "G[ora] Fayerveder" by Capt Tebenkov, Imperial Russian Navy, 1852; "Schönwetterberg" by C.Grewingk, 1850. The Tlingit name is reportedly "Tanaku". Source: BC place name cards, or correspondence to/from BC's Chief Geographer or BC Geographical Names Office
