(1 km W of Town of Canal Flats). (3 km SW of Mount Sabine).

Prominence (depth) is 2707m below Mount Sir Sandford.Description: Canal Flats is the lowest point on the Columbia-Kootenay divide. As such, it links the Selkirk mountains to the Rockies. (See also the description of the Town).

History: The area was originally discovered and used by the Ktunaxa ("hToo nah hah") First Nations Peoples, and when David Thompson came to the valley he called the area McGillivray's Portage. Since then the area has always been a focus of interest because of its unique location. The name comes from the suggested building of a canal to connect the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers (in the days when there was steamboat traffic on both rivers).
