Summary: Edith Cavell Wilderness Hostel Facility Description: A collection of 3 plain, basic wooden frame buildings. One serves as the common room and kitchen, and the other two are dormatories with single bunks. In summer, this hostel is usually crowded with international travellers, and sleeping can sometimes be noisy. In winter there is no car access, and the hostel is often deserted. However, once you have the key, there is firewood, and propane. Sleeping: Dormatory sleeping Dining or Cooking: Propane Water: No running water. Terrain: In summer, there are a variety of hikes one can do right from the hostel. 1. The shortest hike is just 3 km to the lake at the base of Mount Edith Cavell and the Angel Glacier. Above this, a trail leads up into the meadows on the ridge. 2. Another day hike destination is the 8 km hike (one way) to the huge marmot meadows at Verdant pass. This is often used as a high camp for climbing Mount Edith Cavell. In winter, one could ski into the same meadows. During early months of winter, the hostel will often not have anybody in it. It is not a usual winter destination, but often used as a stopping point for trips further into the mountains. Access: The hostel is about 23 km south of Jasper. Drive 7 km south on highway 93, then turn right onto 93A. Travel 5.4 km and turn right onto Cavell Road. Follow the road 11 km to hostel. The road is narrow with tight switchbacks. The road is only open in summer. In winter, there is no staff. If you want to use the hostel, first go to Hostelling International office in Jasper and get the key and instructions (phone 1-877-852-0781). You have to park at the bottom of the road and ski the 11 km up the road. The hostel is sometimes used as a first night stop when skiing into the ACC cabin at Waites Gibson Hut.
